History
Bungee jumping is one of the newest, most unusual, and exciting entertainment and sports in the 20th century. The first bungee jump in Europe took place on April 1, 1979, when David Kirke, dressed in a tuxedo and top hat, jumped from the Bristol bridge in the UK.
The first bungee jumps in Latvia took place in 1989. At that time, the rubber was made by cutting the inner tubes of car tires into strips and tangling them in the braids. Shortly afterward, they started to be used by the participants of the Kurbads group of stuntmen, jumping from the Gauja bridge in Sigulda. The popularity of this activity arose after May 10, 1992, when Ivars Beitāns jumped from the 50m high crane at the Latvian National Opera in Riga.
The Latvian Bungee Jumpers Club, founded in 1994, has developed a bungee jumping technical safety system approved by experts. Sigulda bungee jumping technologies and equipment have been developed with strict adherence to the standards of mountaineering and hazardous equipment with a 7-20 times safety reserve. Since 1992, more than 100 000 people have jumped from the cable car.
