Teodors Zaļkalns' (born Grīnbergs) life was closely connected with the Sigulda region - the sculptor was born on 30th November 1876 in Allaži parish, in the house "Zaļais kalns", built by his father Eduards Grīnbergs. Later during pre-war years, Zaļkalns spent the summers in his parent's house at Valdemāra iela, Sigulda, as well as in his brother Jānis Grīnbergs' summer cottage.

The basics of art Teodors Zaļkalns learned in St. Petersburg, at the Shtiglic Central Technical drawing school, for a short time he attended Auguste Rodin studio in Paris, whereas in Italy, Florence he perfected his knowledge in handling marble and bronze.

Seven decennaries out of 95 years of his life the artist devoted to sculpture, educational work, art reviews, graphics, and also poetry. He also participated in the tenders of Brothers cemetery and Freedom monument.

After the initiative of T. Zaļkalns the Allaži travertine was chosen to build the Brothers' cemetery memorial ensemble.

T.Zaļkalns has admitted that in the field of Latvian art our big corrector is Latvian life - the Latvian man and Latvian nature, therefore the most significant themes of his works are monuments, portraits, and medals of Latvian cultural workers.

T.Zaļkalns sculpture has significantly influenced the development of Latvian sculpture, he was one of the first artists who turned to granite sculpture and he stabilized the stylistic principles of granite sculpture.

He also wrote reviews about the most important principles of figurative art ("The essentials in sculpture", published in journal. "Art", 1965, 4).

He died on 6th September 1972, was buried in Raiņa cemetery, where on his 100th anniversary the monument in granite was erected "The sitting mother" (K. Baumanis sculpture made in granite after the composition of T. Zaļkalns).
