Sigulda receives a rating from the British newspaper "The Guardian"
Sigulda receives a rating from the British newspaper 'The Guardian'

Traditionally, on March 17, the world's most significant and iconic cultural and tourist sites are involved in the international project "Global greening", in which the Sigulda municipality also participated for the first time this year, illuminating the largest cave or grotto in the Baltics - Gutman's Cave

On March 18, The Guardian compiled the eight best sites on the social networking site Instagram, including Sigulda, which is an international recognition given that more than 300 sites are involved in the project each year.

Photos of the best features include the Chicago River in Illinois, USA, the London Eye, Hever Castle in Kent, the Queen's House in Greenwich, and more in the UK and Dublin, Ireland.

We remind you that during the international Global Greening project and the Irish National Day (St. Patrick's Day), famous historical sites around the world participate in the lighting initiative. This year, Sigulda municipality illuminated Gutman's Cav, because it is a unique, the widest and highest cave in Latvia and the whole Baltic state or, more precisely, a grotto cave. The cave is 18.8 meters long, 12 meters wide and has a maximum ceiling height of 10 meters. The cave was formed from the yellow-brown sandstone rock of the Gauja river bank; its formation is due to a millennium-long interaction between the river and an underground spring. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Sigulda region.

This is not the first recognition of the influential British newspaper "The Guardian" (published since 1821) received by Sigulda. Several years ago, British newspaper readers have identified the Gauja Valley and Turaida Castle as the main destinations for autumn travel. Out of a total of 10 travel destinations, Sigulda, Turaida and Gauja National Park were nominated as No. 1, while the Galilee region in Israel ranks second in the top suggested destinations by readers, and the Perito Merino glacier in Argentina ranks third.

It has already been reported that Sigulda has received other recognitions: National Geographic has included Sigulda in the Fall Trips survey, Sigulda has been nominated as the third most beautiful small town in Europe, and Lonely Planet has recognized Sigulda as one of the 50 most mysterious destinations in the world.
